Hey all i had the whole exhuast system replaced on my EL I6 but there seems to be a farting/buzzing noise coming from the manifold/cat area??

Its not loud, but noticable enough to figure out what it is. I went to the exhaust place to get it checked out, i thought it was a leak, but they couldnt find anything!

Its not normal, as my old exhuast system was quiet. Its not noticable when idling but when accelerating next to buildings, ou can hear the buzz/fart noise reflecting off the buildings.

Could it be something leaking at the manifold, maybe the CAT is blocked again?

i have no idea, just trying to see if theres a common fault in the EL I6.

Take it back to them and explain the problem... could have forgotten to tighten some bolts so there's exhaust leaking from the headers...?

the headers werent changed tho?

i did take it back but they couldnt source any leak, and gave me the typical answer, its normal.

But i know its not normal.

my car has developed the same noise, last night i replaced the gasket between the exhaust and cat convertor, and it took a bit of it away, as the old one was shagged. I might double check its tight enough, but i did it pretty damn tight. I might also out some exhaust putty on both sides of the gasket while i am there

Yep definately a loose bolt, letting just a small amount of gas out.

when i got the new exhuast done they didnt put in an original cat. From what ive seen theres an extended pipe coming off the manifold. The cat is welded to this pipe, and i dont know how it goes after this. Maybe instead of the flange gasket setup they have welded that part too?

when i took it back the guy tried to find the leak couldnt find it. He tightened up the bolts connected to the exhuast manifold but still its making the noise.

I dont see this type of noise being a blockage of the CAT convertor, as it doesnt really make a noise, unless at high rpm. I guess i have to take a closer look and try find the leak.

Im thinking maybe the pipe coming off the manifold is the cause.

i had another look at the gasket i had replaced on friday night, and it had already fallen apart...

so i stuck it together with exhaust cement i had lying around, and it seems to be ok now, but will eventually replace it AGAIN!!!

Not easy finding leaks on the headers/cat pipes.

Took me 20mins to work out mine was the join between the two halves of the exhaust manifold. Forget getting the seal from supercheap.. the part they have listed is the wrong size, just use the exhaust putty.

Nothing more annoying than a farting exhaust!!!!!! Flatmate has that on his prelude atm.. gonna cost a mint during the week to fix coz its honda!

i'll try what the exhuast guy did. Get a bit of hose put one end towards ear, the other to check for leaks.

Seems like a good idea.

yup that works... just like alex's tried and true screwdriver to ear for metal sounds :)

Small hose to ear is great for tuning multi carbs without gauges too :) Oh the days of tuning dual side draft webbers weekly.. they were fun!
