Talking to an exhaust guy the other day. Seems that not only are the epa cracking down on the loudness of a system but on late model cars apparently the signature of the exhaust note as well.
This means late model cars with meaty exhaust notes will be done for non compliance. That's a lot of cars.

Lower frequency sounds produce higher decibel readings, that's why SPL competition cars concentrate on subwoofers only. They won't pick the note as such, just what comes up on the sound meter.

sound signatures will be introduced in the near future, this means that if your car has a stock exhaust the new one has to sound identical, hence the aftermarket sports systems will be all but obsolete on new cars, This could be made retrospective
