Re: Straight Pipes cause bad gas mileage?

When I installed my max flow ford mufflers it has produced more horsepower and torque than my old 2–1/2” open pipe. I still can't wipe the smile off my face when I hear the sound this muffler makes. Yes, my gas mileage has improved from 11.5mpg to 16.6mpg on the highway at a steady 75 mph. I also feel it in the performance, especially between 3500 to 5000 rpm's. But of course you need to have the right tools and knowledge in installing a muffler...

Re: Straight Pipes cause bad gas mileage?

Have you tried an "H" or "X" cross over pipe? These help balance flow, and pressure in the exhaust pipes. It would give better lower end torque as well. I would also suggest putting in a glasspack, or some sort of high flow muffler. It would create a bit more back pressure, and help with gas mileage. Good luck, I hope that this helps.

If you had the cats removed you would likely lose mileage. That's the main reason most people have problems after having straight pipes done. Your mufflers shouldn't really have too much role in messing up back pressure.
