XR8 exhaust

got the exhaust done on my ute today..

dont know how happy i am though :(

i got the rear resinator taken off and put 2 2.5" pipes onwith 2 3" tips..

it sounds mean when its idiling now.. buttt

before the exhaust was done it really had that awesome growl up around the 3000-3500rpm range, now it starts at 1000 and has that crisp bark to it, and no growl where it was before..


i went for a run before, seems its maybe lossed some power but not sure..

took it to 5500 through the 1st + 2nd and then 170km/h in 3rd and 4th..
it has a completly different sound to it now when you boot it..

that growl that i loved so much has gone!

I would of thought that the car would just be louder, but still sound samish.

TPC Mod/henchman
previous rides;
1st car EA Fairmont Ghia, extractors, exhaust
2nd EF GLi, 'custom' interior, extractors, exhuast
3rd EA Fairmont 5spd, low'd, extractors, exhuast, head
work, 3.45LSD, EL dash, interior+ El ECU
4th EB2 Fairmont, EL dash and interior, BBM, LSD etc etc
5th EB Fairmont Ghia 5L. All leather, lowered, exhaust etc

Without knowing too much about back pressures of exhausts etc the change in diameter size at that point in the line of the pipe could affect power somewhat.

Where did you get it done?

Is the front part of the system still factory? I took the rear resonator out of my EF XR6 and replaced it with a straight through pipe. Sounded like those 4 cylinder wanna-be V8's you hear driving around.
And at highway speeds the droning in the car was unbearable.
Put a HM Headers tow pack system (quiet version of their sports system) on sounds slightly louder than factory and then tried straight thru tail pipe and sounded ok, must be the factory system is tuned with all patrs required.

got the system done at BROS EXHAUST in Werribee for $100 including 2 3" tips..

not sure if i prefer the stock system now..

if worst comes to worst, i'll get the HERROD cat back system when i get back from my boat cruise in 3 weeks...

Teza going by other threads it sounds like you really love your ute and i dont blame you so you might as well give it the best and the best is Herrod.
