no need - it sounds perfect for me. Mind you I need it tuned because it idles lumpy, a little low, need to tighten the screw a quarter turn in the TB... that and get the engine checked by the guys downstairs because she still ain't engine braking and you need it when you want to fang everywhere... brake dust builds up too quickly
Agrees with Resty, there is no need for the resinator! sounds so crazy without it heheheeh

Matt, how is the exhaust going now? I am thinking of getting possibly a full stainless exhaust system in a month or so and was wondering if yours still idles lumpy or if it was a simple fix.
Some friends of mine have recommended Remus exhaust. Have you guys heard anything about them? They are a bit expensive but I want one that sounds good but isn't loud, if that makes any sense..... I'm not trying to make a 4 cylinder sound like a V8.
Since I don't know much about exhaust systems (I do know what is in them), when you get a full exhast rather than a cat-back, what extra is changed (obviously the cat, but manifolds too?) ?
It's going absolutely gangbusters, sounds better than ever since it has settled in an mellowed a little, become slightly louder. The idle problem is a problem with my car, not the exhaust, but it has gone away and the car has recently been absolutely 200% perfect. NO regrets, I just settled for a mild-steel cat-back with a GOOD-flow central muffler, however you can get a high flow if you wish or whatever you want. Just PLEASE PLEASE avoid a cannon, don't cheapen your car. You didn't buy a Hyundai or Mitsubushi, It's a German built Euro Hatch and deserves better than a Milo tin!!!
I seriously didn't see the need either for full stainless or for an expensive exhaust... I paid $300 for mine and it absoutely perfect for my needs. A Good exhaust shop should custom build one easily for less than $500, if not go elsewhere. Tell them you want sound, power, tune, note, whatever, they should tailor the muffler to suit.
I'd recommend spending less than anything Remus has to offer, although they aren't a bad looking unit those Remus tips, just do some shopping and make sure you're happy with the exhaust shop itself. I was lucky to have a relationship with our local shop as our dealership used them for new cars and thus I knew the guy well, he really looked after me and hit the spot with my exhaust.
I know what you mean when you want it to sound european. Quiet and deep at idle-and not sounding like a lancer when you wind it out. Did the exhaust do anything for your insurance?

Don't worry Matt, I think I despise those exhausts as much as you do. I just want a nice exhaust note that sounds a bit sporty. Nothing that will wake the neighbours everytime I come home. But thanks for you advice, it's good to know what works well with my exact engine. I will shop around and I have a friend in the mechanic/exhaust business so will talk to him too.
So do remus only make tips or do they do mufflers as well? They do look nice but I won't buy them if it is just a tip. I just liked the sound change they had on the website, albiet for a mondeo..... exactly what I am going for. Just like Suth said, quite and deep at idle, but a bit louder than stock when accelerating is what I am after.
You might as well avoid Remus if you are on any form of budget... anything with a brand name will be dear... like Herrods. On a car with a small engine like a Zetec, it just isn't worth the extra dough. Go to a local shop, one perhaps with a good name but really just all u need is the right diameter pipe and a chrome tip, some non-gay mufflers and u'll be set. I guarantee u'd love my exhaust though, trust me, I'm fussy as all hell and I am yet to meet anyone who doesn't grin with pleasure when they hear the rally rasp that my exhaust gives out when tickled hard...
I know what you are saying matt and you are right. The more I think about it, I don't want to sink too much cash into an exhaust. Do you have a sound file of you exhaust??? I'd be really interested to hear exactly what it sounds like... the rally rasp sounds perfect!
btw, how is it at highway speeds? Is there a constant drone, or can you still hear music easily?
I will record onto my phone and post the wav file here on the forums when I get a chance...
As for highway speeds, it's brilliant, barely hear it at all. If you didn't know, you seriously wouldn't be able to tell even with the stereo off, NO joke. It is so perfect I just love it. Just what I wanted. I will Go home to Melb (In Sydney this weekend) and record it onto my phone then post the wav here.
Oh and Suth - NRMA included my Exhaust and lowering springs for no increase in premium or excess... it's call Fleet Insurance!!!! They don't give a stuff!!! If I was individually insured alone, they'd fry me but as part of my dad's work's 50 car fleet, they turn a blind eye... then dude even told me all about his rally cuild up escort and we chatted for 20 minutes about the Focus!!! Nice!! Work's policy is no Wrexies and No HSV's, all the rest they're happy.
