Could this be a resistor used to modify the sensor output? i.e. a
resistor probably costing no more than 10 cents.

Quite possibly - at least as the profit margin on these things is concerned.
But in general, any such tweak that provides a useful power boost will
probably increase fuel consumption in normal driving, as well as require the
use of premium fuel.
