1994 Ford Taurus SHO Power Sterring Problem

Need help - Installed new Steering rack and pump on 1994 SHO - steering
works fine at idle and when engine is cold - after running down the road a
few miles the power steering stops working - let the car sit for a while
then start it up and it works fine? Could this be the Variable Control
unit device?
