'83 F-150... What type of differentials/carriers/housings do I have?

I have an '83 F-150 4x4 stepside with a 302 and 4 speed with granny 1st
gear. What type of differentials came in this truck? I think the rear may be
an 8.8. It has the removable cover on the back. Am I correct about the rear?
How about the front?

Cory

As far as I can remember, the 83 should have a 9" banjo style rear... front
end is a Dana (I can never remember the weight designation but only the
"small" one was offered in 1/2 ton). FWIW, your "granny gear" trans would be
New Process NP435...

Cory, your 150 should have a 9 inch rear rear, and a dana 44 front

Re: '83 F-150... What type of differentials/carriers/housings do I have?

Rear is not a 9 inch. It has a bolt on back cover which looks like the back
of a later model 9 inch. I don't think the 9 inch ever came with a bolt on
rear cover though. I'm gonna do some work to the truck tonight so I'll crawl
under and have a close look at it.

Any way for me to identify which Dana the front end is? My 4 wheel drive
doesn't work. The driveshaft and axles spin but no power is applied to the
wheels. I learned that last night when I got stuck real good and had to have
my buddy yank me out. If even one of the front wheels was getting power I
would not have been stuck.

I will say that these trucks flex a lot! At one point trying to get out I
was on two wheels, front left and right rear. Could tilt the truck back and
forth in the air with one hand. The bed corner was touching the cab window
edge. I thought the frame was bent, but my front bumper and bars in front of
the grille were straight and the cab looked crooked. Not sure what was up
with that but it's straight now and the truck drives fine.

I thought for sure I at least damaged the front end, but no bad pulls or
vibrations on the ride home. These are tough trucks! Heck, not even any
vibrations from the u-joints, and I assure you I beat the hell out of that
thing trying to get it out, which I almost did with some digging and
rocking. Tonight I'm putting new Warn premium hubs and u-joints on the
truck. Should at least get power to one of the front wheels after that. The
reason I ask about the differentials is because I want to get some lockers.
No more of this only one wheels turns crap!

Well, moral of the story is to be sure your 4WD works before wheelin' and
bring tow straps so you don't gotta run around at night after everything is
closed trying to find some!

Oh, and thanks for the info on the trans. How are these transmissions to
rebuild? It could use new synchros and the shifter is sloppy as all get-out.
It shifts real nice when double-clutching, at least now that I've figured
out the trick to finding 3rd gear (most of the time anyhow).
