95 Ford Aspire alternator belt HELP

alternator recently changed and alternator belt start rubbing on
timing belt cover, tore a hole in cover and broke the belt. What could
have caused the alternato belt to start rubbing on the timing belt
cover. As far as I could see the alternator is in line with everyting
else. Any help on why this happened or even a easy way to change the
belt would be greatly appreciated. 95 Ford Aspire, A/C< no power
