A network of 73 police-based Victim Service Programs operating 105
victim service units (VSUs) has been established . All municipal
police services and most RCMP detachments have a VSU. Victims are
referred after initial police contact. Victims and witnesses
associated with cases where charges are laid are provided a full range
of court support services. While the majority of VSU coordinators are
paid, victim advocates are trained volunteers. Among agencies that
provided statistical date to Alberta Solicitor General in 2000/2001,
18 percent of clients served were children.
