Ford Ranger/Mazda truck question

Anyone here have any experience with the Mazda trucks that are the same as
the Ford Ranger?

My daughter has a 1999 Ranger 4X4 and is quite pleased with it. My 89
Nissan truck was destroyed in Katrina (along with everything else we owned)
and I am now looking at used trucks to replace it. I have been looking for
a V6 4X4 Ranger around $10,000.00.

I have found a 2003 Mazda B2004 (I think that's the model number). It is
exactly like the Ranger -- 4.0L V6 SOHC, 4X4, extended cab with suicide
doors, automatic. This truck has 86,000 miles, which is a bit high for a
4-year-old truck.

I drove it around the block in 2WD, 4W-HI and 4W-LO and detected no drive
line noise other than the normal 4WD noise. Engine sounds good -- valve
train is quiet and engine is strong. Detected no evidence of burning oil,
no evidence of leaks in transmission, transfer case, or rear end. Took my
hands off the wheel and slammed on the brakes at 60MPH -- it stopped in a
straight line; took my hands off the wheel on the interstate at 70 MPH, went
straight ahead, no pulling to either side.

Truck is very clean, no dents, scratches, or rust -- appears to have been
garaged. I ran the A/C and the heater -- no cigarette odor and the ashtray
is clean. Cloth upholstery has no wear, spots, or stains.

There is a "squeak-squeak-squeak" from the area of the fan or the top idler
pulley -- I suspect it's a belt pulley that needs lube or that is about to
go -- noise is not from the water pump, alternator, PS pump, or AC
compressor.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

Thanks.

You gotta be missing something if you slam on the brakes at 60. (:^o)

Sounds like a winner. Lessee - exact same platform, built on same line,
you like Rangers.... so.... Only thing i can see that MIGHT vary is the
body steel quality.

But you're in the south, outside the salt belt.

Make a chalk mark on the belt... bet you find the 'squeak' relates to a
belt revolution. And the pulleys make many rev's per that one, right?

Which usually means that it got coolant on it.

Re: Ford Ranger/Mazda truck question

Ford had a tsb out for the Explorer with the same engine that told you to
replace the waterpump pulley with a updated 1

Not sure if that also goes for the Ranger

Replacing belt only helps temporarily

Re: Ford Ranger/Mazda truck question

TSB generally only applies to vehicles build during specific time periods,
rarely to every one ever built

Re: Ford Ranger/Mazda truck question

Is the dealership in the same area where Katrina hit
It could be a flood unit, make sure the title is not branded that way. Find
out thru carfax is there are any problems as well
