Mazda 323 tranny replacement

I have a good auto transmission and torque I wish to install in my "91" but
am reluctant to start until I get a few opinions on the project. Since
space is such a problem when tightening up the torque converter nuts
behind the flywheel, I am wondering if I should pull the whole engine
first and re install both as one unit. Must I invest in an overhead hoist
for this job?? I understand that I must remove the starter in order to
have a window to tighten the torque nuts.
I have never seen so many wires, cables and vacuum lines on a
transmission before.
