Try pumping the clutch pedal several times--just as you would a brake
pedal--and then try shifting into reverse. If it goes into reverse
noticeably easier, check for hydraulic clutch problems, such as master
cylinder, slave cylinder, and fluid levels. Reverse is the only gear NOT
synchronized; hence, if clutch action is merely partially complete, the
forwards will go into gear w/o grinding whereas reverse won't.
Also, what Krusty old Geezer suggests: it acts the same with
non-hydraulic clutches where linkage to clutch or clutch itself is
defective.
