You have a problem with your clutch release system. IT may
be any one of several things but, it is likely the hydraulic
system. I do not recall if you have to buy the complete
system on that one. If you continue to drive it that way,
it will screw the transmission.

1. What happens when you shift it into adjacent forward gear first, then to
reverse?

2. Any grinding or other difficulty shifting forward gears?

- either clutch adj or shot ... or shifter.

Try pumping the clutch pedal several times--just as you would a brake
pedal--and then try shifting into reverse. If it goes into reverse
noticeably easier, check for hydraulic clutch problems, such as master
cylinder, slave cylinder, and fluid levels. Reverse is the only gear NOT
synchronized; hence, if clutch action is merely partially complete, the
forwards will go into gear w/o grinding whereas reverse won't.
Also, what Krusty old Geezer suggests: it acts the same with
non-hydraulic clutches where linkage to clutch or clutch itself is
defective.
