I've often thought of these 2 Ford motors as the epitome of Ford BB
power- question:
If each one took its turn being installed in the same car, with maximum
tuning and rear gear, which would be the fastest ?
Which one would dyno the most HP ??
I always tended to favor the 429 Boss as it was a more modern design,
but recently got to see a running Cobra that someone stuffed a SOHC 427
into- WOW- that cammer is one nasty beast too !

I have read that when Ford wanted its drag racers to switch from the 427
SOHC to the Boss 429, the racers really lost of lot of horsepower and
engine speed due to the 429's heavier crank and bigger pistons, which
used more power to overcome its inertia.
Not having been there myself, I can only repeat what I read.

There is some merit to that observation- the 429 had a 3" main journal,
and the 427 had a 2.75" main journal- the smaller main journal will
have less friction and make more power and rev higher, given the same
airflow, cam, carb, headers, tuning. Reason being the larger journal
has more area in the bearing to produce rubbing friction on the crank.
But it seemed to me the 429 had a more modern cylinder head. The one
thing I found odd about the old FE design was, the pushrods were
interfere with the intake ports and are in the way- the flow has to go
around the pushrod bulges in the intake.

Re: Boss 429 vs. 427 SOHC- <---Bullshit artist in the house
this "desertbob" guy hates American cars and hates V-8's, calls them
"gas hogs"- and he actually bought a new diesel powered Volkswagen car
POS at one time- so take his post in that respect- he's an
anti-American asshole that should be deported.

Well, with that argument, I'm convinced. Organize a militia to round him
up, hog tie him, and send him to Gitmo.

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security,
unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you
would not hear of that party again.... There is a tiny splinter group,
of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H.L.
Hunt...a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician
or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they
are stupid."
