Re: Clutch Pedal Problem on 1972

The Mustang Steve kit requires welding. The Scott Drake kits do not.

Re: Clutch Pedal Problem on 1972

To be precise, the Scott Drake kits don't require welding unless your
pedal support is so egged out that it can't hold the bearing tightly.
In that case you've got to weld the supplied washer to the pedal
support.

Also of interest is the fact that the difference between the two kits
is that one comes with a replacement shaft. You can order it
separately too (as link # 2 indicates). If you decide to swap out your
shaft you'll need the help of a machine shop to install the
replacement.

I think it would be pretty easy to tell whether you need to rollerize
your pedal support -- just look up under there while an assistant pumps
the clutch and see if the pedal is moving eccentrically.

I put one of these kits in my kids' '65 even though it didn't have worn
bushings, just as an upgrade. It definitely gives your clutch pedal a
smoother feel. The two hard parts about the install were putting the
assist spring back on, and then getting the pedal support back under
the dash with the pedals installed. While disassembly was not problem
there looked to me to be no way I was going to be able to put the
spring on with the pedal support in the car. (Although some claim to
have done it.) So I had to assemble the support with the clutch pedal
and spring and brake pedal all installed and then try to jiggle this
mess into place. It actually required removing the steering column and
unbolting the steering gear. In other words, two whole weekends of
Mustang fun.
