The replica shroud is $200 through Dearborn. Trouble is, if I picked
one up and it doesn't work, than I have to go through the hassle of
paying for its return, and a 20% restocking fee.

I think I'm going to try a hard-blade fan in place of the 18" flex fan,
but not make the move to a fan clutch yet. If the solid fan doesn't
work than I think I'll have to look towards either getting a custom fan
shroud made, or downsize to a smaller solid fan with fan clutch, and
get the dearborn shroud.

What do you guys think?

Jason

Try looking for '63 and 64 Mercury's with A/C.
The original shrouds have two pieces and are bolted in the middle with a
spacer. If you lengthen the spacer you may get enough clearance for the fan.
The shroud should really be the correct part for a 427 as well as a 390 car.
My brothers '64 Marauder currently has its shroud removed if I can get a pic
of it I'll post it for a look see.

Re: Correct Fan for a 1963 Ford Galaxie, 427

StuK,

Thanks for the help. I got the car back together yesterday, and
sitting in my driveway (as I expected) the temp got up to 210 (then I
shut the car off). I figured that the flush/flow for the radiator
would make things a little better but nothing significant.

Here are specific pictures that show my clearance problems (note the
top edge of the fan and how high it sits above the radiator):

CAn you get that fan a little closer to the rad? Even 1/2" might help it
pull through the rad better.

Try using an external trans cooler. Put the trans heat into the air instead
of in the coolant.

Oil Cooler.

Re: Correct Fan for a 1963 Ford Galaxie, 427

The lower edge of the fan is within 1" of the radiator already, and I'm
fearful to put it any closer since it's a flex model. The last thing I
want to do is shred the radiator (even if it isn't working as well as I
want it to haha). On the other hand, I can't move the fan any closer
to the block (aka shorter spacer if needed with a shroud) unless I go
with a smaller diameter fan - the top edge of the fan (when not
spinning) comes within 1/2 an inch of the radiator reserve tank - very
close!

I also do have a trans cooler - it's mounted on the frontside of the
radiator so you can't see it in the pics. I'm not sure what the exact
model is, but it is pretty good size.

I'm also considering putting the header insulation wrap on to contain
some of the heat within the headers. Maybe that will help to bring
engine bay temps down a bit.

I'll ask again hoping that someone will see my request - does anyone
have pictures of a FACTORY bigblock fan/shroud setup? In other words I
need pics of a factory '63 bigblock galaxie that came with A/C. I'd
like to see how the fan, fan size, fan clutch, shroud, and fan guard
(at the top of the radiator) is set up. That will help me determine my
next steps, with respect to possibly migrating to a shroud and proper
fan setup

Can someone from the Ford Galaxie Club of America help with the pics
above???

Thanks again,

Jason

You're forgetting the flex fans flatten out as the RPM's go up. So the
blades would get farther away from the radiator, not closer.

Re: Correct Fan for a 1963 Ford Galaxie, 427

Check alt binaries.pictures.autos. I posted two pics of 427 motors. Title
is "for Willis"
As I discovered one is a Ford the other a Merc. The Ford has a solid fan the
Merc a clutch. Neither have air but I'm not sure it was even an option on a
427 powered car. Neither has a shroud just a finger guard.
