I had an eye on a running '69 coupe or the HCS. I picked the HCS because of
its rarity and his impramatur on it.

The HCS's were all built in San Jose. Mine in Dearborn. Scheduled build date
was 1 day before public release of the HCS's. build date of 22G. The cars
were released on 23G and my car sold about 1 month later.

Nope it doesn't pay dick, course I have a higher security clearance than
when I was in the AF, but I get paid about half as much. All the crap you
have to know to do this job and the extensive training and crap just to keep
this nation safe from those mother****ers overseas who want to kill us, and
the goddamn airport window washers make $5 more an hour than I do. Is that
****ed up or what!?!?!
No frustration there huh.
Yep, daily driver is the 'Chero. It's about to fall apart on me too. The
only reliable thing in the car is the drivetrain. Rebuilt both the motor and
tranny in the last 2 years along with a bullet proof 9" out back. The rest
is slowly rusting away or failing due to old age. 13mpg.

Playing the cynic here for giggles, is it possible that a Ford
dealer elsewhere in the country, perhaps wanting to test-sell HCS's at
his store, special-ordered this car in Timberline Green and affixed the
stickers himself? I mean, other than the color and stickers, what
separates an HCS from a regular car?
I'll use the GT/CS as an example, since I know more about those.
Putting the Marti report factor aside, someone can come *close* to
faking a CS because the VIN is that of a standard coupe. Most of the
external parts can be had NOS or reproduced. However, there are several
"hidden" items that are specific to the real ones that would definitely
give away a fake unles it was made from an original parts car.
So, are there any such parts on the HCS?

Yes, it is. What about private security positions? Not necessarily
rent-a-cop, but maybe on-staff in a corporate building or complex? An
Air Force background should get you in the door somewhere. Police
department? Window washer?

Gosh no. I suggest focusing your current frustrations into
development and aggressive pursuit of a new game plan. I'm doing the
same as I approach the big five-oh this year.

That's pretty crappy mileage for a 302. I'd take a look at the
ignition and carb situation.

They weren't stickers, they were brass badges that were hammered into the
fender with special "screwing" nails made from brass also. These were
distributed to the dealerships that were recieving the HCS cars. For the
'68s that had the decal on the side scoop. These were made from a single
"die" and that original now lays in the hands of Bob Teets the Registrar. A
fake would be easy to spot by the right person. Bob Teets also has the dies
for the '66 and '67 badges. No more can be made of any of the three without
his "dies".
> So, are there any such parts on the HCS?
On the '66 and '67, other than the special paint code and the badge, no.
However, they were were all built on the same day and only in San Jose. They
would all have the same build date and plant code, these are known facts. On
the '68's, yes.

I'm currently looking into the Fed Reserve. I'd end up as a Federal LEO.

I'm just approaching the big three-five this year. :)

Well, I'm running a basically brand new 600 CFM Edelbrock on top of an RPM
Air Gap intake with stock C8 heads and a .060" OB C8 block. Stock crank and
a cam from Melling similar to the Edelbrock Performer. Not quite mild but
not wild. 10:1 flat tops. MSD Ready to Run dizzy. Heddman Mid length headers
out 2.5" exhaust exiting the sides behind 18" glasspacks. I think part of my
problem is the engine wants to rev, but my 2.70:1 peg leg 9" won't let it
with the C4 commanding the gearshifts. The engine works it's ass off to get
to speed, but once it's there it's OK. On the Highway it's good, but the
streets kill me.
I get better MPG out of the 400 inch Windsor with 3.70's out back; at least
on the street, since the engine practically torques itself up to 15mph
without even pressing the gas pedal. It doesn't have to work at all. Until I
hit the highway with it, then eeeshhh. MPG goes to shit.

The other problem I thought of after typing the first response, is how would
this dealer know what color to order since the cars hadn't been released
yet? Timberline green was a special order paint which didn't have a name in
the Ford books, it was a DuPont paint mix code. How would he know what it
was? Plus, the car was sold here in Colorado from the Correct DSO and had
the badges. Where would this dinky dealership get the correct paint code and
end up with badges too? The dealership truly was a dinky one down in Pueblo,
it doesn't even exist anymore. On top of that, why would this car come from
Dearborn. As far as I've been able to tell from my research, all the '66
Mustangs sold new in Colorado were built in San Jose. I've asked lotsa guys
at the shows and called others who have Denver DSO cars and they all came
from San Jose. Mine is a special order for Denver that came out of Dearborn,
clear across the country!! Why!!

We may never why, Scott. Perhaps the dealer wanted a demo sooner
than the rest of the guys. Perhaps Ford built yours for publicity shots
taken in Dearborn and then shipped it off. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.
I take it you found no build sheet in the car.
This is the way I see it. With nothing to document this as a real
HCS, what you have is a '66 coupe with special order paint. Truly, you
don't even know whether the badges were put on at some time after the
car was sold, since it didn't go down the San Jose line. I'm sure
replacements were available over-the-counter from Ford on a
country-wide basis. From what I read on your web page, there really is
nothing beyond hearsay to establish this as a model that was actually
nothing more than paint and badges anyway.
As a serious buyer, I would remain unconvinced. In your shoes, I
would sell this car on Ebay or wherever as exactly what it appears to
be and nothing more: a special-paint coupe that had HCS badges on it
when you bought it. Let the new owner decide what to make of it, and
don't be caught having to prove authenticity in a court of law. Don't
mention anyone else involved in this deal in your ad. Recoup what you
can and move on to more important matters.
Anyway, that's my four cents. I don't see anything else to do about
it, other than whack the shock towers and jamming an FE into it.

The Performer cams, as well as many other brands, are made by
Melling and private labelled, and are best bought from Ebay dealers who
actually call them Mellings or TRW's.
I can see where the intake and the gears won't like each other.
Should be a lot of 3.25 gears floating around.

The badges were made here in Colorado and were applied by the dealer, not on
the line in San Jose.

They weren't. As soon as the run was finished to have them on the HCS's,
there were no more made. Probably a max of about 350-400 sets of badges
stamped in '66.

Correct. It's sut that it has EXACTLY what is necessary and original to the
vehicle to make it an authentic HCS, other than the build date and plant
code.

If I can get a couple grand out of it I would be satisfied. If for some
reason I keep it, I'll either transplant the 302 out of the Ranchero or cram
in a 512 stroker 460. ;)

Which still brings us back to why Bob backpedalled on you. He knows

There ya go! If you keep it and are able to authenticate it, I have
two '66 dated blocks w/heads and 289 cranks, and a '66 2V intake, and I
think some '66 dated exhaust manifolds.
