Ah shit, that was a brain fart! It was ordered with a 3.25 Traction-Lok,
which I believe was made by Dana, not Detroit Locker. Do you know who made
it for Ford?
Anyway, in a turn with very little to no torque to the wheels you can
hear/feel one of the axles rachet. A little more torque in a turn and one
of the tires squeal thru the turn. AND, when I drop the clutch and punch it
at 3,000 RPM, it leaves the prettiest twin black marks you ever saw!

Well, the ratcheting thing could be a real Locker, possibly added
later. You should check out the diff. What's the axle code? Why do you
think the trans is a wide ratio?

Good. Behind a 390, this will probably be a small input shaft. See
David Kee's site to ID the trans for sure.

Sell it and buy one with a working clock.
So now, all you have to do is figure out if this is going to be a car
that turns corners as well as hooks up in a straight line. Do you have
a strip within range?

Fords "Limited slip" clutch rear ends of that vintage are called Traction
Loc, Traction Loc units first appeared about 1969, prior to that from about
1964 to 1968 they used Equa locs. Don't know of a vender who manufactured
them for Ford, never heard of any reference to one either.
Your description of how your rear-end is working sounds a lot more like a
Detroit locker than a Traction Loc clutch "Limited slip". If indeed you do
have a locker with 3.25 gears I can pretty much guarantee that the locker is
not original from Ford and was added some time later. For '71 Drag Pack
option cars you got either 3.91 Traction-Lok or a 4.11 Detroit-Locker
differential, the only 429 (S)CJ Mustang gear ratio that got a
Detroit-Locker from Ford in '71.

It turns corners fine and there are absolutely NO curvey roads within 50
miles of Midland, Michigan, so a straight line is fine.

A gear change will give you the most bang for the buck. 3.70's or
3.90's. A Shelby trac bar will work with fresh 4-leaf springs and
stiffer bushings. Look at gusseting the spring mounts to the axle
housing and reinforcing the sheetmetal above where the front spring
mount attaches to the subframe. The trac bar will try to separate this
section. Look for thicker rear shackes. Aftermarket 1350 u-joints and
upgraded axle studs.
