My former father-in-law use one in northern Kentucky (right across the
river from Cincinnati to heat his 3 car garage.
His was essentially a wood stove made of a drum (smaller than a 55
gal) on an angle iron frame. Up in the rafter area in one corner he
had a separate drum for oil. A copper tube carried the oil down to the
wood stove, with a valve to control the flow rate (rather than being
either on or off).
He'd start a wood fire in the stove, and then he'd add the oil. It
dripped into the fire, and as I recall, the drip rate determined how
warm the garage got. So, he really wasn't using as much oil as people
might think. Of course, he had a work truck, two sedans, and three
daughters who each had their own cars (and changed their own oil,
etc), so he had a pretty good source.
I'm not positive, but I seem to recall that he had another drum over
the stove drum (looked like a figure eight) which contained water.
