Re: E04D trans compatibility question

As long as it is the same engine block mounting pattern. For example, a 302
or 351W will interchange while a 302 and a 351M will not.

Re: E04D trans compatibility question

351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain
housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes
diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on
intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.

There are more specifics but this should tell you which engine family you
are in.

Re: E04D trans compatibility question

You cannot have a 351M or 400 engine in a 1995. They were discontinued in
the early 80's. For your application, I think if you have a 302/351 they'll
interchange fine since they both have the smaller bell housing. If you have
a 460, it's a larger bell housing. I'm thinking the 300 (4.9) is a large
bell housing also, like the 460, but it might be the smaller 302/351
housing. Someone else will know.

The Bronco was only available with the Winsor series V8 or
the 300 six. Do not know what the van has. It could be
anything up to V10. If the van has the 300 six, 5.0L or
5.8L engine, the trans will bolt to the engine with the
correct flywheel. The only problem I would predict is that
the Bronco is a 4 wheel drive and the van is not likely a 4
wheel drive. That means the tailshaft and housing would
have to be changed to work in the Bronco unless you are
willing to forego the 4 wheel drive and make a new drive
shaft. The rear mount will also be different in some way.
IIRC correctly, there was a change in the electronics
somewhere along there so, you will need to make sure you
have all the same resistance measurements. If you have to
change the output shaft which I believe is the case, you may
as well rebuild your old one - the whole damn trans has to
come apart to do this. Once you've gotten this far, you may
as well get a master overhaul kit and rebuild your old one.

Re: E04D trans compatibility question

The 300-6 is a small block bell housing.
