Undercoating/rustproofing?

Just bought a '04 Ranger leftover. The dealer was doing a hard sell
on the above saying that paints are now enviro friendly and with acid
rain & road salt (NE US) they highly recommend both treatments.

Opinions?

Re: Undercoating/rustproofing?

He's selling you a load of crap. Undercoating is next to worthless and in
fact, it often traps salt and water between it and the frame of the vehicle.
Consumer Reports has done numerous studies on this issue and each and every
time they come to the conclusion that the only party benefiting from
undercoating is the dealer who sells it.

Re: Undercoating/rustproofing?

Save your money and pass on it. Just wash out the undercarriage at a local
coin-op every couple of weeks during winter.

Spend the $$ on a pressure washer instead. Every few washes, crawl
under there with the washer and hose all the crap off.. (Don't use
the "pin" spray. Use the "Fan" pattern.)

The washer can also be used to clean your eaves, clean the driveway
etc....
