What's the difference?

Hi. I've got a dumb question for the group. I own a '95 Ext cab F-250 PSD
4x4 with the XLT pkg. My brother just bought a '97 Ext cab F-250 PSD 4x4
"Heavy Duty"...

What makes the distinction between rgular F-250, and F-250 Heavy Duty?
Is it spring rates, shocks, bigger axels, a combination, what? They appear
identical parked side by side as far as ride height, ground clearance,
springs and shocks "look" the same... Can anyone tell me what makes his a
Heavy Duty, besides the fact that it says so in the side of the truck? Any
info is appreciated, TIA.

Re: What's the difference?

look to see if there is a difference in the gvw.
some time in that area they added heavy duty to the name to make idiots
think they had something special.
in the old days the difference in a F250 and a F250 HD was a gvw of 6600lbs
for the F250, and 8800 for the 250HD

Re: What's the difference?

In '97 you could also get an F250 (light duty) which was built in the
then-new body style. After a year or two it became known as the F150 7700
(referring to the gvwr). The old pre- 97style body was carried over until
'99 (I think) but only in 3/4 ton (F250 HD) and 1 ton (F350) models. They
were ultimately replaced by the Super -Duties. So I'm guessing that there's
not a whole lot of difference between your truck and your bro's

What gave the one an extra 2200 pounds of weight?
Just curious,

Re: What's the difference?

LOL, you know, I was laughing to myself thinking the same thing.
" Hey little brother, nice light truck you got there. Hey, check out how
far I can pee".
Of course, I'm not poking fun at you, probably more at myself than anything
else.

Peace,

Re: What's the difference?

Several things can make a difference in the GVW rating. Things like brakes,
axle bearings, number of spring leaves, size of the U joints, etc. A lot of
thngs have to be taken into consideration. Park them side by side and begin
by counting the number of leaves in the rear springs.

Re: What's the difference?

light duty has dana 70 axle...you can remove drums with out pulling
axles....h.d. has dana 60 axles...also light duty has 5/16 springs..h.d. has
3/8 thick springs.spring packs are arched the same for light and h.d.
...thus the same highth.
