Any help or advice please ? ...cockpit air blower has suddenly gone mad - it blows ok but very loudly, several times noisier than normal. The air does not appear to be coming through the vents properly, hence all the windows steamed up in the recent wet weather. The settings dial has always only seemed to operate on 'full' (dial mark 4), but at least I have been able to de-mist the windows !
I know nothing about these things but I assume there are some flaps and/or hoses behind the dash console which direct the air correctly. Does anyone know if there is a serious problem here - or am I on the right track guessing that a flap is dislodged ?
Is this an expensive garage job, or could it be tackled by myself - my mechanical skills do not go much further than the ability to undo a few nuts and bolts and screws ...and Im not joking ! [ My Haynes manual only leaves me more bewildered - eg. under-exposed illustrations give no clue about the location of the bits and pieces behind the console, etc ]
Would appreciate any diagnosis - or advice re a simple cure...

Hi mate
Not sure I understand your problem completely but it seems you have more than one. If your fan only works on maximum speed, more than likely the blower fan resistor has failed. You also mention something about the vents and air flow. Many of these cars had problems with vacuum leaks from the fan speed switch. The switch itself has one electrical connector on the back and a vacuum connector above it. When the switch fails all your vacuum leaks and air from the fan will only blow onto your windscreen regardless of the position you select (face, feet, etc). If you are in a quiet place with your windows up you'll be able to hear a hiss coming from the fan switch for a couple of seconds after you turn the engine off.
Changing the switch is not too hard as long as you remember to pull the centre console back and a couple of hidden screws behind the ashtray.Hope this helps.

Hi Fordtech .. thanks for your brief message and because you were brief, I'm more interested in your line of thought ( I'm always up for the cheap, quick-fix way out on any car or mechanical foul-ups that come my way ! ) ...I just hate the thought of feeding more money to rich, fat, rip-off garage owners !

Anyway, if you got a little more time - can you direct me to where I can find, and how I can gain access to the pollen filter ... the word ' filter ' suggests to me that you think there's a blockage in my 10-year-old Mondeo's air vents ... and all it may need is a replacement piece of gauze or whatever ? is that what you are suggesting ? ...

Yes seen this a few times when they've never been changed, the low airflow causes many problems with the vacuum system etc. Have a look here, it's actually for the Cougar but the Mondeo is in the same position;

BTW you only need to take the left-hand trim off on the Mondeo, and the site's in French but lots of self-explanatory pics.
