2003 mondeo break lights always on, pls help

my break lights are permenently on when my headlights are lights are turned on, but just work normally when the headlights are turned off, not very good when you are a night time cab driver like me, has anybody got any ideas?

With twin filament bulbs it's possible to put them in 180 degrees around in the socket, so that it works back to front ie when the sidelights are on they shine 21 watts instead of 5.

thank you for that, you were nearly right! i had put a single filament bulb in instead of a twin filament, and it must have been shorting the circuit!!!!
i feel like a right prat, thanks for the info.
