Well I'm sickened to say that after a $414.00 visit to the dealer, they found nothing, but the fuse is not blowing any more.

Through the process of elimination when the tech was removing the speedo cluster the fuse stopped blowing.

He found no bad wires.

They said if it goes again the speedo cluster would likely have to be replaced.

I can imagine what that would cost. The car is only worth a $1000 bucks.

They also charged me $6.50 for a fuse....ripoff pricks

Thanks again rtg143

Re: 95 Contour gl

Sorry to hear that. Seems like it must be in the instrument cluster. If they changed a jcase fuse, they are expensive. Chrysler and Toyota started using the and now Ford. What was the $414 for? Did they explain it?

Re: 95 Contour gl

This is from the bill...

Installed headlamp bulb in place of fuse, disconnect c206, c302, c410, c221, c222,-dead short still present, remove cluster dead short is gone. Check both harnesses going to cluster no problem found.

If problem happens again will need cluster

4.5 hours labour@ $80.00 per hour
shop supplies $6.50
plus taxes
$414.15

No jcase fuse changed.

rtg143....is that the only thing that would screw up the cluster? or is there a circuit board in it...I never had one of them apart.

Thanks again.

Re: 95 Contour gl

According to what the diagram shows, it would be in the circuit board or Speedo itself. You said it never quit so, that circuit seems odd that it would quit when it was unplugged.

The 6.50 is what most shops charge as supplies to customers to recoup costs for rags etc. It hurts when they couldn't have a positive fix. All that time and they don't know what it is. Hopefully it won't happen again. Maybe they fixed it with all the moving things around.
