Re: 95 contour running hot

I have a 1.8 but they are very closely related. Mine ran about the same, like you I changed the thermostat, but I also put new coolant (the Ford stuff that's meant to last the life of the engine!) mixing it 50/50 with filtered water which brought the needle to the middle of the word NORMAL just edging towards the left leg of the M

Hope this helps

Re: 95 contour running hot

I have a 95 2.5L. I changed the thermostat to a higher temperature part and it ran hot like this also. I then purchased a low temperature(sorry) I can't remember the degrees but it was the lowest of the three types. The car runs on the cool side, just barely on the scale. When i had the "hotter" temp thermostat in, it ran hot and at the lights the fan would kick on. Too hot or to cold will harm the engine. I prefer too cold b/c heat will shorten the engine life and coolant system.

Re: 95 contour running hot

I just posted another thread in the V6 Tech forum regarding a similar problem. So I got a few ideas from this thread regarding what to check. But my overheating problem happened quite quickly. The symptoms I could see were...
1. Temp gauge on dashboard well pass the red (off the scale)
2. Coolant had spilled out from the cap of the coolant reservoir

Don't know if this was related, but minutes before I realized the engine was overheating, my A/C cut out. Would an overheated engine cause the engine controller to cut out the A/C?

Given how quickly the engine overheated, would it be more likely a blown water pump than a clogged catalytic converter. What other symptoms should I be looking for?

My contour is a 95 with 2.8L V6 with 106,000 miles.

Re: 95 contour running hot

Interesting thread. I have a 96 with the 2.0 engine. Mine runs at about the m. However the fan won't kick on until the gauge gets to the L and then cuts out at the A . (just replaced the temp switch) If I run the AC from the beginning it won't go above M.
It has almost 94k and I had the water pump replaced at about 84k.
