'96 Mercury Mystique Issues. What a surprise.

Okay, I will try to keep this short and simple (though that may be impossible).
When I first got my MM, it ran GREAT. Better than most cars today run. Then when summertime hit, the cooling fan would come on (even though the temperature meter was be between 0-or the "n" in NORMAL), and once that fan came on, I knew I had only 15-20 min before my car shut off. Again, the temperature was NEVER in the red, but the RPM(??) meter would bounce wildly when the cooling fan was on. That was my first problem.

Next, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT was always on. Had it checked, got the code (forgot what it was), but mechanic said it's nothing "lethal". But the way I see it is, if the CE light is on, something MUST be wrong or my car wouldn't "say" that. It's pretty much like the car is telling me, "Hey! Something's wrong here!"

Third, my car ran fine the other day, then when I attempted to drive to my university, it started jerking like i was shifting gears but I wasn't. It was hard and uncontrollable jerks. Took it to mechanic, he said the OVERDRIVE button was stuck, and that i may need a new transmission which would cost b/w $2,000-$3,000. W.T.F. The car was running JUST FINE the day before and now it's pretty much about to be totaled out. Any suggestions??? I love that car to DEATH and of course I shed some tears when I was told I would need a new car most likely. Right now Im driving an '09 Acura TSX...but I would really like my Mystique back asap.....seriously. Thanks in Advance!

change out the throttle position sensor (TPS) and/or the IAC (idle air controller). both are located around or on the throttle body. A bad TPS is commonly diagnosed as a possible transmission problem.
