98 Mystique starter

Just picked up a nice little mystique.

When I go to start the car, the starter give a strange squeal(sounds like when you turn try to start when the car is already running). Previous owner said it's been like that for the 3 years that he had it before me.

...couple attempts and its fine. Sound like starter going bad? or any other ideas?

Re: 98 Mystique starter

It's probably the starter but in some cases the ring gear on the flywheel can get damaged and have to be replaced. If it does it EVERY time, it's probably the starter but I'd get it replaced and look at the flywheel when it's off.

Could also check the pre-engaged starter pinion is sliding on shaft o.k . Can stick if shaft has dirt / dust on shaft not allowing it to throw fully forward to engage ring gear properly . If so , case of cleaning up shaft / pinion usually fixes it .

Re: 98 Mystique starter

It's not every time, but frequently. I'll check into the suggestions. Thanks!
