My girlfriend has a 1999 Mystique, 2.5. DOHC non interference. I am the mechanic of my friends and family and i have a couple of questions.
Is this engine a vtec?
When the headlights are on and def on with radio the cars lights, including interior and exterior, flash, I turned off the heat, and radio, sat at a stop, and had my headlights on, and when i put my brights on i noticed a change in the engine. The same sound as when you have a car running and you hook jumper cables up and the sound the running car makes when it connects to the dead battery.
I suspect alternator, reason being is that the battery is brand new, has no corrosion on or around terminals, and alternator is original. Today aftter drivign to college, i noticed that the battery light was faintly on, and flickering, my windstar had a bright red constant light when my alternator was shot, and my ground came loose.
I know i have to rip out the alternator to get it tested. Ive heard some horror stories. I saw it the other day. behing splash guard on the passenger wheel well. Is there anything else i should check? I havent used my multimeter yet. How would i hook it up to the alternator? To me from my experience is that the alternator is being over amped, it cannot produce a high enough output to sustain the needs. I think this is the voltage regualtor inside. please help
