Blower only runs on High

Hi There All ...

Just when you thought your Mondeo was running the best in a long time ... something craps out ...

This time (thanks goodness) its only the blower ...

The symptoms are it only runs on high and I understand it will be the resistor bank that has burnt out ... but can anyone tell me where it is and how easy it is to replace ?

Thanks
Chris

cool Re: Blower only runs on High

I have now solved this one ...

For anyone with the same problem ... it was not the resistor bank in the end ... it was dirty/melted contacts in the plug.
To get to this plug, I removed the plastic panel on the center console above the floor area of the passengers side, then I removed the small piece of cloth like covering above it. The plug was in (I think) the fan which is against the firewall.

Hope that helps someone in future.

Chris

Re: Blower only runs on High

I have a similar problem with my P Reg mondy LX TD.

The blower only works on the highest setting and the dial is stuck there, it wont twist round, only rotates 5mm either way which causes the blower to stop and come on (also it doesnt seem to be blowing at full power, maybe level 3). Also with this problem, the blower direction dial (e.g. windscreen, person, person and floor, off etc) has no effect on where the air comes out of, its coming out onto the windscreen no matter what you set it to.

As you can imagine this is somewhat puzzling to me, i'm going to get it looked at but i just wondered if anyone had experienced any of the same problems? Luckily its stuck on the windscreen as i said, so i can still clear the mist heh, but still it's a bit annoying.

Cheers,
DAN

Hi, If your blower only works on the highest speed, this is probably why :
Ford uses a crude method to slow the blower speed when you switch to the lower speeds. They use a resistor pack located in the passenger footwell (under glovebox), these resistors get hot to dissapate the blowers unused power when switched to the lower speeds. The resistor pack sits in a duct, cooled by the airflow to the cabin which passes through the pollen filter (under bonnet just below windscreen). As the pollen filter becomes blocked the airflow decreases and a thermal fuse blows on the resistor pack, the thermal fuse is there to prevent the resistor pack from melting if it gets too hot.
Remove resistor pack and test thermal fuse, if its open circuit, fit new resitor pack and pollen filter and blower should work on all speeds.
And remember change pollen filter regularly or it will happen again.

Thank you for posting this picture! I just had this issue on my 1999 Mercury Cougar and the part was in the same location. I paid $15 for a new resistor pack but would have never found it tucked up underneath the glovebox. I snapped the new pack in and all 4 fan speeds work. Thanks again.

You need to check the vacuum hoses behind the dash and the thin vacuum hose from the engine manifold. The default position is windscreen and if there is a leak this is where it goes.

Check manifold (in the engine bay) about in the middle is a 5mm plastic hose which disappears into the firewall.
Check behind dash. listen for hissing noise (very faint) check all the coloured hoses into the back of the two dial controls that they are attached. Check the dial controls are not leaking air. If so either replace the control or block the tube

Hope this helps
