I have a 1996 Ford Contour with a 2.0 four cylinder. I have replaced both o2 sensors. I continue to get a check engine light.The car has a pcm not ignition module. Please advise me how to fix this problem.The Snap-On code finder said the number one bank is too lean

I still need help with original problem with the 1996 Contour with the check engine light problem. I get a P 171 code . I replaced both O2 sensors. That did not fix my problem. Code 171 means that the number one bank is to lean. What is the number one bank. I know that it is not were you get money. If any one has fixed this problem before please let me know how. I im machanicaly incline person Thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!

well first did you clear the Code after replacing the O2's?

They will not reset themselves. And if you have then sorry for asking.

Also, just for giggles. I had the same error on my Impala Love those OBDII cars. Sheesh. Ended up being a bad injector. GO figure.

are you idling rough?

If so then check your egr valve first.
Also, check the vacuum line that runs from the PVC valve to the air intake plenum.

If that is not it then look below these are just some of the reasons that you would have the p0171 code.

Fuel system:

- Excessive fuel pressure.
- Leaking/contaminated fuel injectors.
- Leaking fuel pressure regulator.
- Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel.

Induction system:
- Air leaks after the MAF.
- Vacuum Leaks.

EGR system:
- Leaking gasket.
- Stuck EGR valve.
- Leaking diaphragm or EVR.

Base Engine:
- Oil overfill.
- Cam timing wrong.
- Cylinder compression problems
- Exhaust leaks before or near the O2s.
- Improperly seated engine oil dipstick.
