I had this on again off again engine code when i first bought this car used. and i got the code read, misfire or cat converter. I ruled out misfire because the engine timing is good, and runs very smoothly at all speeds. The people at auto zone said it was the converter. I told them it seems to go away if i fill up the tank and everything. they say that next time i fill up to buy a thing of rubbing alcohol and dump it in. I was told there is oil plugging the converter up. THis worked surprisingly. For aboout a week or two. Now the engine light is back on, should i keep doing the rubbing alcohol thing?
I was told they were replaced less than 20,000miles ago. I will look at it tonight. But why did the engine light go off after pouring the alcohol in the gas tank?
1999 Mecury Mystique. v6 dohc 2.9l i am pretty sure. I do not have the codes anymore, but when autozone read them the possible causes were misfire, and catalyctic converter
