Fuel Pump problems

This topic has been hashed out on the contour.org forums, but I wanted to put out feelers here too.

Ford has a program for some of the Cougars (1999-2002) to replace the fuel pump modules.

The replacement FDM part number (kit, actually) is the same for the Cougar, Contour and Mystique (XS2Z-9H307-CA) (Note: XS2Z-9H307-AH referenced in the 04n02 program document has been superceded by XS2Z-9H307-CA).

I'm contacting Ford Customer Service to see if they are going to include the Contour and Mystique, as my 9/99 Contour and my dad's 99 Mystique (both V6) have the same problem as outlined in the Program 04N02 documentation (staling, hesitation, loss of power, surging), and the problem is definitely fuel level related (much worse below 1/2 tank than above), although recently My Contour had loss of all power even with a full tank. It is an intermittent problem though and seems related to temperature (worse when hot).

Anyone have any info on this?

Re: Fuel Pump problems

It might not actually be the pump itself, theres a screen on the bottom of the pump that has a nasty habit of getting clogged up. I think the screen itself cost me $14.00 at Autozone
