My Ford Contour has over 174,000l miles on it.There is a check engine light on below the speedometer that will not shut off.Have checked the owners manual but to no avail.The place I took it for repairs did not look at it because they didn t want to cost me anymore money.They suggested to keep on driving it until something happens.What do I do and what could be the problem?

Take it to Autozone and they'll pull codes for free. Let us know what they find.

Thank you Bert.Took it Autozone yesterday and they pulled the engine codes for free alright.The guy asked me if my Contour had been misfiring and I told them yes sometimes.He thought that a tuneup with new sparkplugs may be needed.

If it hasn't had new plugs in a while, that would be a good idea. I'd change the fuel filter and plug wires too. Also, clean the MAF with MAF cleaner.

Did you ask for the Code Number? If you go back, ask for the OBDII Codes...then right them down.

We can give you some idea of what would be causing the problem.

So I took it to Custom Dyno Tune where I have had work done on it the past year.Told Jerry ay CDT what AutoZone came up & he said that they were not mechanics.Well anyway CDT checked out the engine & they seem to think that one of the celoids must be misfiring or something like that.The light they turned off but driving the road it came back on.

From what you tell us about CDT in post #1 and #6, they don't impress me. One doesn't need to be a mechanic to read the codes. Any shop that tells you to drive it until something happens and they don't even know what's wrong with it........ I'd run like hell the opposite direction as fast as I could.
