Little Help: 1999 Ford Contour Check Engine

Hi, We have a 1999 Ford Contour. It's due for inspection and the check engine light has been on for quite sometime. We've taken it to the garage (not the dealer, yet) and they've had the computer hooked up to it. We haven't been given any explination why the light is on, what's causing it, etc, (in other words, there aren't any codes showing up) just that the car won't pass emissions until it's off... anyone have any ideas? No one seems to know why its on....

When they hook up the code reader cant they reset the computer? I am not exactly sure. Also try going to Autozone or another Place where they will check the code for you for free. Have it tested with the car is on and the light is lit. If it is lit there should be a code. If still nothing I would look into disconnecting the light for your emmisions test. I live in Michigan and we don't have to have our cars tested but I would think that they test the exhaust gases too right? If that passes then maybe pulling the light will work.
