Hi,

I have a 1997 Mondeo stationwagon 2.0 16v automatic.

I have had a long standing problem that occurs when I am cruising under no load. The symptons are that the car feels as if it is missing.
If I put my foot down it sometimes gives a miss but usually the problem goes away.

Recently I encountered a problem where the car would start, idle for a few seconds, then cough and die. It was found that my air flow meter was faulty, and it was replaced with a second hand one.

I am very suspicious that this unit has been (and maybe still is) my problem ... but any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ...

I have now fixed this problem ...

For any lucky person that encounters the same ... here is the sequence of events I had ...

Initially I changed the HT leads (this helped but didn't 100% cure)
Then I replaced the spark plugs (again this helped but didn't 100% cure)
Then I checked the plug gaps (This didn't help ...)
Then I replaced the air flow sensor (This made a HUGE difference but not 100% cured)
Finally I found that I had cracked one of my spark plugs during checking of gap setting ... (Replaced this and hey presto ... we have a normal car again)

There is still one outstanding thing that could possibly have caused the same fault, which was to be swapped out next in the sequence ... and this is the throttle position sensor.

If I had my time again I would certainly have checked the air flow snesor first !!!!
