Really depends what model he is looking at ...I have a 97 mondeo. Up until now been a pretty reliable car but experiencing transmission problems as we speak. Low fuel consumption i get about 600km to a full tank and about $50 to fill ...however I mostly drive on freeways so that does bring the fuel consumption down. Problem with mondeos is maintenance. Mechanics dont want to work on them because its too difficult and the dealership service centre obviously cost a little more. Parts can be expenisive and are rarely standard stock so there is often a delay in getting the parts needed because they have to be ordered from Sydney or overseas. They do tend to run a little warmer than most cars as well which can be disturbing. Power is lacking but as long as your grandpa isnt too partial to overtaking at high speed or dragging people off the line that probably wont bother him haha. Resale value is not the best due to new car prices as is with most used cars now but mine has dropped approx 4k in value in just over a year. Its a nice car to drive if you just like to cruise but not built for speed. Getting used to everything being back to front is quite an experience as well... the indicators are on the left not unlike most european imports and even the windows wind the opposite way. My advice if the veh isnt new which i doubt because I think Ford stopped importing them here is to buy one with a good warranty, get it well checked out before he signs on the dotted line and find a good mechanic to service it regularly. For mine if I could do my time over again I would have bought a different car....they really arent built for aussie conditions or for driving in traffic more for english country roads with no traffic lights stopping you ever few km. All this said I do know someone else who has one and they have never had a problem with it so go figure.
thanks for the help mate, the cost of servicing, parts etc... doesnt overally bother him. he justs wants something a bit smaller then a falcon, but not a laser or anything.
any other info would be great.
cheers
steve

Yeah well let me know if he still thinks that when he gets the bill for his first service The size should suit him but like I said get it well checked out first....good for long cruisy drives but drives like a dog if he is just going to the shops and back in it. Otherwise have you seen the new XR6? Not as big as previous falcons...very sleek and looks mighty sweeeeeeeeeet hehe :s6: Good luck with it
lol i will talk to him about the xr6, but dont like the odds.
Thanks for the help, the service and parts cost wont bother him... He more just wants a car which is smaller then a falcon, and comfortable, but he wont buy a holden lol (its in the blue blood)
