Mondeo ST220

The ultimate rep racer has been unveiled, but Ford New Zealand says it's too soon to tell if the impressive Mondeo ST220 will ever touch our tarmac.

Let's hope it does. Boasting 161kW, the front-drive 3.0-litre V6 model it is the most powerful Ford since the 169kW Escort Cosworth. The engine is a specially engineered version of the Duratec 24-valve unit that powers Jaguar's S-Type sedan.

Launching in Europe and the United Kingdom in sedan, hatchback and wagon form, the ST - for Sport Technologies - is obviously easily identified by a distinctive bodykit and 18-inch wheels. But it also has a bespoke interior, complete with bright new leather seats and a gloss-finished black centre console.

Capable of 0-100kmh in 6.8 seconds and with a top speed of 243kmh, it's quicker off the mark and faster overall than the previous 2.5-litre ST200. It also promises to be a more relaxed drive as well, with maximum torque arriving at an easily accessible 4750rpm. The ST200, by comparison, needed to be driven hard to extract the best performance.

The five-speed transmission is well suited to offering the blend of sprinting ability and refinement that Ford claims it was chasing when designing the new ST220.

Hope this makes it to NZ, I'd buy one !

Hell i hope it hits NZ as well along with the Focus hopefully. These sporty models give the line something special. It would be interesting to see what the price is though.

Danm. 161kw and has the performance of a 200kw XR8...actually a little quicker! This thing must weigh not much, and its FWD too.
Imagine this with a turbo!

Can anybody tell me how much they are worth.
Ive got an EB XR8 and I was thinkin of goin an AU XR in a year but I saw speedweek the other day with the GTP cup at Oran Park with those Mondeo's and DAMN do they fly!!! They easily out handled the 300kw monaro and TE50.
I'm thinking of changing now!
Any comment or more info on the Mondeo would be greatly appreciated!

The last few of the 2.5 V6 ones in Aus were sold at dioscounted prices 'cos they were hard to move - and this was the sweet V6 that the Cougar has albeit only 125 kw. In light of this I would be surprised if Ford Aus had another go at importing these.

But you never know...

Has there been any update on wether the ST220 makes it to NZ or not?

I hope it does come because the 125Kw ST is not enough - although I did read an article which said that Ford NZ were looking to sell a special version of the ST done by Retro products which consists of a exhuast, air filter, tyre/wheel, and leather package.

The former bumps engine output up to 145Kw.

eek

That must be some exhaust system and airfilter to make 145kW!

The 2.5l ST200 required a larger throttle body, different cams, reprogrammed ECU, larger exhaust, airfilter, and extrude honed inlet runners to make 150kW........

I believe the new ST runs the same 2.5l V6 Duratec and is still rated at 125kW, which would suggest similar mods would need to be done to get up around 145kW.

What does the new model weigh? My ST24 is 1370kg from memory.

The new model Mondeo ST hatch weighs 1467kg

And yes Ford & Retro do a Mondeo ST with mods which include:
BMC Air Filter (Carbon dynamic airbox)
Remus Exhaust
Retro Leather
Ford 18" Wheels
Sunroof

Question

Do they have a web site with any pics etc? I'd be interested in having a look at what they've done.
