Hi, I've got a wierd problem with my 2002 mondeo TDCI. It's making a very intermittent noise that I can only describe as a kind of rasping/buzzing/grinding noise.

It's not terribly loud and only seems to be heard when I'm cruising between 30 and 40 mph. I don't hear it at all doing 70 on the motor way (maybe because it is being downed out). I definately never hear it whilst accelerating and don't hear it in 1st or 2nd gear. I think it mainly happens when in 3rd/4th gear when either traveling at a steady speed or letting my foot off the accelerator. The fault does not seem to be effecting the running of the engine, apart from the noise the car is running normally as far as I can tell.

It also seems very intermittent, I commute 40 miles to work and can sometimes get all the way to work or back without hearing it all. Other times I'll be hearing it alot for 10-15 mins and then it'll go away. The problems been there for a couple of days and I would assume will get worse...

Any idea what it might be?

Could it be a loose or damaged radiator fan hitting against the radiator?

Might make sense, as I recently had the radiator hose replaced due to damage caused by it not being properly clipped to the side (apparently it'd been damaged by the fan), I guess it'd make sense that the fan might sustain some damage too? Would that explain the symptoms I'm getting?
