Tire cables on sport package 18" wheels?

My owners manual states that tire cables or alternative traction devices cannot be used on the 18" wheels with 225/45R 18 tires. Has anyone who like me would like to travel to the snow found a solution to this?

Winter tires is your best option. If your local laws allows studs to be used, use those. They're better than chains.
