Ford's second-generation hybrids due in '08 on Fusion, Milan sedans
AMY WILSON | Automotive News
Ford Motor Co.'s second-generation hybrid technology will debut in the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans in 2008.
Hybrid chief Mary Ann Wright wouldn't provide details about the second-generation changes. But she said the upgrades will improve fuel economy, performance and affordability.
The Fusion and Milan will be Ford's fourth and fifth hybrids. The Escape Hybrid sport wagon went on sale last fall, and sales of 20,000 units are expected in 2005. The Mercury Mariner Hybrid will go on sale this fall, and the Mazda Tribute Hybrid will arrive in 2007.
Ford CEO Bill Ford announced the Tribute and Milan as new hybrid nameplates on Sunday.
Company executives wouldn't forecast its hybrid volume in the coming years.
But Sunday's announcement gives Ford among the leading number of hybrid nameplates expected from any industry player. Toyota, which made the hybrid segment hot with its Prius sedan, also has new nameplates arriving. Toyota sold almost 54,000 Prius sedans in the United States in 2004.
The automaker's priority is satisfying customer demands, not surpassing Toyota in production numbers, Wright said.
She said, "I'm really not in a volume race with Toyota."
My first car was a 67 Mustang Coupe, 2nd one was a 67 Cougar XR-7, 3rd one was a 66 Mustang Coupe. Why did I get rid of these cars for ? I know why, because I'm stupid, stupid, stupid.
