Channel 4
14/7/2003
Volvo is launching its On Call service this autumn. Part of the Communications Pack option on S60, V70 and S80 models, it will cost around £2,650 including an integrated GSM phone, and links drivers to a call centre to offer services including SOS activation, direct breakdown notification and assistance, remote unlocking (phone the call centre and it can 'talk' to your car's security system if you've been locked out or lost your keys), notification if your car alarm has gone off, satellite tracking in the event of theft, route guidance and travel services. Future functions could include online monitoring of the engine's performance, potential problems and servicing requirements, then contacting owners to bring the car into a garage for maintenance, and even automatic downloading of software to fix problems. The current system is also to be offered on the XC90 and XC70 at a later date.
