If you run them without water in them, about 30 minutes

On a properly maintained engine, the head gasket should last the life of
the engine.

note the use of the word "should"

Austin Shackles. www.ddol-las.net my opinions are just that
Once, when the secrets of science were the jealously guarded property of
a small priesthood, the common man had no hope of mastering their arcane
complexities. Years of study in musty classrooms were prerequisite to
obtaining even a dim, incoherent knowledge of science.
Today, all that has changed: a dim, incoherent knowledge of science is
available to anyone. - Tom Weller, Science Made Stupid, 1986

Re: 300tdi Head gasket

the gasket will not usually blow unless youve cooked the engine by
overheating it or by revving the tits off it for a long drive .

if you do blow one youll probably need the head skimming flat again or
even require a new cylinder head casting .

these engines dont usually run very hot at all but i can see youre down
near hallet cove and at this time of year its very hot there , so i
dont know what kind of temps youre engine reaches .
it would be a good idea to have the viscous fan and an electric one in
front of radiator to aid cooling at those times .

even in the summer here at 28degs the 300tdi doesnt really get hot as
such , so they have plenty of scope for warmer climates , which is
probably what they were designed for anyway .

if youre having a problem and need advice may i suggest you put
together a list of symptoms etc you are seeing and then post the
message on here and also on the DIFFLOCK.COM landrover forum .

A cynic might read that as 'when the head gasket goes t'engine is dead"

well, yeah. not precisely, though. In our case, it cost a new head, but
still cheaper than a new engine.
