bung. i want to change them to brass before they break.

I seem to remember that they were advertising brass ones in the back of
a few of the comics up until recently. I snapped the one off the 90 by
accident (just a smidge tighter should do it - SNAP!), and found a
suitable replacement in a box of plumbing stuff in the garage. Try your
local plumbers for one!
