Dan, had the same think happen on my classic, idiot at the garage said it
was the gearbox!!!!!!
Anyway it turned out that you can just get the rattling cat replaced, there
was a place locally who cut the bad one out and fitted a universal one. Ran
the car for 2 years and never had another problem.
