some time later...

it only goes wrong if driven consistently above about 55 mph. So, suspected
lift pump. Having looked at where the bugger's mounted, I then decided to
jury-rig an electric one in the pipework to see if it solved the problem.
Some fiddling later, and off I go down the road; sure enough it goes fine.
Hang on, what's that stuff on the rear windows? SHIT!!! pull in hastily to
find jury-rigged pipe has come apart and merrily spilling expensive stuff on
the road. Looked at it again, hangon, the diesel's comeing out of *that*
pipe, which is th eopposiste way to the way the electric pump is pumping...
oops.

switched 'em over so it pumped in the right direction, and it then didn't
blow apart. However, the fact that it was running OK with the return from
the injector pump dumping fuel down the road led me to think the lift pump
is OK.

Next, pulled the filter housing for a proper look at it. Pipes labelled 1,
2, 3, 4. Some study reveals that some kind soul previously has put the feed
from the lift pump where the return to the tank should be and vice versa.

Swapped 'em over, and so far it's running OK....
