My workshop checked my car thoroughly and could not find what is
causing the rough idling in my car. They finally suggested that they
change the ECU unit( I am not too sure if that is what its called) This
unit cost quite a bomb new. My question is can this ECU unit be
repaired? If not can a good used one be used instead. According to my
workshop it cannot be done as the computer units are programmed and
must be made to suit the car. Being such expensive equipment i am sure
Jaguar should provide some form of warranty. I would appreciate some
advice from anyone who have experienced this. Thanks. Syed

Sounds a bit drastic to start swapping out parts like the ECU - smacks of
graspin at straws.

Is your workshop an authorised Jaguar dealer, a Jaguar specialist or your
local man with the spanners.

Where in the world are U. Age car, engine, description of problem,
diagnostics already undertaken to resolve problem - i.e. give us some info
to work on here.

My car is the XJ8 1998 model. V8 engine.Like i said the car idles
rough, like some pistons are out. The whole car shakes and engine
sounds very rough. But upon accelerating the power is almost normal.
The garage is Sisma Motors, the authorised dealer and workshop for
Jaguars in Malaysia.(that's where i am) They have gone through all the
checks from compression, pistons, wires, well almost everything and
couldn't find out what is wrong. They say their diagnostic computer
keeps showing the fault is with the ECU.
Well, they have kept the car for three weeks and came with the answers
above. They keep no stock of the ECU, so now they want to buy one ( I
pay if it solves the problem, but what if it doesn't; I am back to
square one) and check whether the fault is really with the ECU. As far
as they are concerned there is nothing wrong with the engine.
Maybe if i can get some questions to ask them and see what answers they
give.

Your dealer has checked the two major worries that can cause rough idle.
Nikasil problems and timing chain issues. As it has been with the dealer
for weeks we can eliminate shorts in the leads etc.
If they have checked poor connections and swapped wires you may be left with
just the ECU. Can they not buy one in but only charge you if it fixes it ?

Richard,
Yes, that is what they are going to do now, buy a unit and test. If it
works they will charge me. From what they say all indications are
towards the ECU. Thanks for advice.
