x300rear wheel bearings

Hiya,

The car is a '95 x300 sovereign. 114k miles
Have what originally I thought was tyre/road noise from the rear of the car.
It's a very slight whine, worst at about 60mph, no vibration at all.
Just put the car on a ramp and there is slight play in the rear wheels so
I'm figuring the wheel bearings. No oil has leaked from the diff.
How big a deal is it to change these things? What's involved?

Thanx in advance for any help.

m

Re: x300rear wheel bearings

Although I have seen wheel bearings fail it is far more common that
the output bearings fail in the diff. I will typically remove the
output bearings to spin and inspect them. However their should be very
little play if any from the bearing itself. Make sure that you are not
confusing output bearing movement with wheel bearing movement.

Ah ha,

Thanx Blake, had the Sov on the ramp and 'tis the output bearings as you
say.

So, more help required if you have the time please.

Do these bearings fail big style in short order or can it wait a few weeks?
I was gonna replace the front dampers this weekend but should the diff get
priority?

How do the bearings come out? Anything I should know about particularly?
Seems to me that 4 bolts gets the driveshaft off and then 4 torx bolts gets
a cover off. Is it that easy?

Your help is very welcome

Yes it is that simple, just be careful to make sure the shims stay were
you have found them. As for the bearing, you can save yourself some
cash if you get them at a local bearing house. Its a common bearing.

If you have a press and a bearing spiltter its a straight forward task,
otherwise you'll need to take it to someone to do it for you.

Re: x300rear wheel bearings

Cheers man,
Thanx for the help and advice,
The local garage gives me the keys to go and play with all their kit so now
I know it's not a horrid job I can crack on with it.
I didn't want to get the Sov on a ramp and still have it stuck there on
Monday morning when they're expecting to earn money on it.
