ive just bought a ba falcon xls mkll ute, 05 model, and am thinking of converting it to gas. ive been quoted around $4500 for direct port injection and around $3300 for just a normal conversion. obviously i would prefer the cheapest option but have heard that a normal conversion can cause heaps of problems and one mechanic said he would never do it and would strongly recomend against it however another said it wouldnt really matter and if i was just driving the car normally and not racing it there would be no difference between the two! whats my best options here??

I guess you have gone one way or the other way back when. My BA sedan was given the standard inlet manifold job and has done just as well as the old EL with the same system. Of course, I don't know how good the direct injection is but can't really fault the cheaper version.
