2.3L turbo Help

Hey guys im new to this forum. I just bought a Manx with a 2.3L turbo pinto/Mustang motor (cant figure out where it came from) I have very little history on the car and motor. I know it has some Esslinger parts on it but not sure what was done on the internals. Anyway i took it out to the desert this weekend and it was running fine. The Car was making tons of power eventually i pulled the revs up to about 6K and then it started making a slight knocking noise but only under a load. If i drive it on flat land and keep the revs constant the car sounded and ran normally. When it got back to camp the car started not wanting to idle or run anywhere under 3k RPM. My dad is convinced the timing is off or the tune went out of whack. It sounds like the knocking may come from the valve train but im not sure. Again this motor is brand new to me. Any help, advise, or comments feel free to drop them off in this thread from me.

Thanks guys.

Wouldn't do any harm to take your dads advice and check to see if timing jumped .Good place to start .

Re: 2.3L turbo Help

has anyone heard of pre-detonation for no reason under a load only? I hear a lot about EGR valves and all that but i dont know exactly what it does for a buggy.

Re: 2.3L turbo Help

Pre ignition can be caused by over advanced timing / timing out .

Re: 2.3L turbo Help

would pre ignition make a knocking noise only when the engine is under a load? normally only does it in second or third gear but has no power at all.

Re: 2.3L turbo Help

Well if the motor is modified could be set to run a higher octane gas!! If you don't know what's done might want to try and contact previous owner for info on mods.
